4 finalists for Tucson fire chief interviewed
30th September 2008
Candidates for Tucson fire chief met with a diverse group of representatives from various community organizations as the city whittles down the final selection.
The four male finalists were asked Monday about dealing with minorities on calls and about recruiting them to work for the fire department.
Each candidate said he'd met with members of racial and ethnic minority groups in their own departments as well as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups.
They generally agreed the Tucson Fire Department needs to diversify.
They also suggested the department create a database to keep track of residents with disabilities and keep it regularly updated.
The head of the city's human resources department says Tucson City Manager Mike Hein and Assistant City Manager Richard Miranda will choose a candidate for the job and refer him to the City Council in mid-October for confirmation.
