The D.C. police department’s Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit was recently involved in the following cases. The GLLU assists in a wide variety of cases and its involvement does not imply any person or business is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
• A man reported to the GLLU on Oct. 6 that he was a potential witness regarding a September 2007 homicide in Alabama. Officers are assisting members of the relevant law enforcement agency in Alabama with interviewing the witness.
• Police were called Oct. 6 at 4:30 p.m. to the intersection of 18th and P streets, N.W., to respond to a reported robbery. Officers found a man who told police that he had attempted to stop a fight among a large group of juveniles. The man told police the juveniles then turned on him and stole his cell phone. Officers located six girls that the man identified as part of the group that turned on him. The phone was recovered and returned to the man.
• A man reported to the GLLU on Oct. 8 that he had received two pieces of mail containing homophobic epithets. The man told police that each piece of mail contained a single piece of paper with the epithets. The mail was postmarked from Washington and delivered to a home in Maryland. The U.S. Postal Inspector is assisting with the investigation.
• Police were called Oct. 8 to an apartment along the 1500 block of Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., to respond to a reported stabbing. Officers found a man suffering from a serious cut to his neck. The man told police that he was stabbed by a man with whom he shared a brief, intimate relationship. The man also told police the suspect was intoxicated and an argument had ensued. The suspect fled before police arrived. The man was taken to a local hospital, treated and released.
• Police were called Oct. 10 to a club along the 1100 block of Eighth Street, S.E., to respond to a reported disorderly person. Officers found a man who was refused entry to the club because he appeared intoxicated and had become irate. The man was arrested for disorderly conduct.
• Police were called Oct. 11 to a home along the 2300 block of 20th Street, N.W., to respond to a reported assault. Officers found that the two men at the residence, who were in a relationship and lived together, had become intoxicated and a dispute ensued. Officers determined at some point, one of the men wouldn’t let the other leave, and that man struck the other to escape. Officers were unable to determine which man was the primary aggressor and arrested both men. Neither man was seriously injured.
• While on patrol Oct. 12 along the 1700 block of 17th Street, N.W., a GLLU officer found an 82-year-old man wandering and disoriented. The officer determined the man had been walking in the area for several hours in an attempt to return home. The man was identified and returned to his home along the 1400 block of 17th Street, N.W.
• Police were called Oct. 12 to a club near the intersection of 22nd and P streets, N.W., to respond to a reported assault. Officers learned that a man who had been previously barred from entering the club was denied entry, became enraged and assaulted the employee who had denied his entrance. The man was arrested. The employee was not injured.
• Members of the GLLU are assisting the Criminal Investigations Division with multiple, apparently related theft cases. Police said the cases involve a large group of male-to-female transgender people causing disturbances in clothing shops while other members of the group steal merchandise. Police said no injuries have been reported, but in some instances, store employees have become involved in physical altercations with the suspects.
