Woman cheated of gems in bogus marriage deal
31st October 2008
A 27-year-old woman who came here from Ipoh to look for a job in Singapore ended up being conned of her jewellery in a bogus marriage deal.
The bride, who was in a wedding saree together with her entourage of parents and relatives, only realised that she had been duped after waiting for hours at a temple in the city several days ago. She subsequently lodged a police report.
Prior to the incident, the woman had befriended a transvestite who promised to help her get a job and even introduced his rich friend to the victim early this month.
After courting her for about two weeks, the man proposed to her and both agreed to get married in a temple in Johor Baru.
The transvestite convinced the woman hours before the wedding to hand over her jewellery worth about RM30,000 to him for safekeeping as it was not safe for her to walk around with so much jewellery.
The victim did not suspect anything amiss and handed over the bag of jewellery and later met up with her parents and relatives who accompanied her to the temple.
However, they realised they had been duped when the groom and the transvestite failed to show up.
Police are investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
In an unrelated case, a 38-year-old ex-stewardess has lodged a police report alleging that the man whom she has been married to for the past four years was actually a married man who had falsified their marriage certificate.
The woman, who has a three-year-old daughter with the man, had given about RM100,000 to him to help out with his business. She only found out about the lies when their marriage failed recently.
Investigations showed that the man, who is married with three kids, had befriended the victim in 2004 and subsequently married her.
